McDonough was a nationally known and respected sports journalist.
He was a reporter and columnist for the Boston Globe for 42 years. Over
the years, Will earned many awards and honors. He was voted Massachusetts
Sportswriter of the Year five times by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters
Association. He was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1984, an honor never
before or since bestowed upon a sportswriter. His stories have also received
top honors by the Associated Press and United Press International. Will
is a pioneer in sports television. He joined CBS' "NFL Today"
program as a regular contributor during the 1986-87 football season. He
was with CBS for four seasons, and then moved to NBC's NFL studio programs.
His success led to opportunities for many other sportswriters on national
television. Will was honored by the NFL Hall of Fame in 1990 when he was
presented with the Dick McCann award. Will McDonough was a founding Board
Member of the Sean McDonough Charitable Foundation. He died suddenly in
January 2003. He will live on in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
