Inaugural Sean McDonough Charitable Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic 2002

3rd Annual Sean McDonough Charitable Foundation
Celebrity Golf Classic 2004

The 3rd Annual Sean McDonough Charitable Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic was an outstanding success! The Samuel Adams Celebrity Draw Party & Auctions at the Boston Harbor Hotel was a lively, star-studded event with plenty of laughs and even a few tears. Guests enjoyed a performance by the Mother Caroline Academy Gospel Choir. Academy Award winner Matt Damon walked away with the lion’s share of live auction items after doing battle with sitcom star Mike O’Malley on a number of items.

The Celebrity Golf Classic began with a touching tribute to Will McDonough. The kind people at The International installed a plaque in memory of Will McDonough, Sean’s father, on hole 16, which was Will’s favorite hole. Hole 17 became player Peter Bell’s favorite hole when he shot a hole in one to win a Mazda donated by the generous people at Wellesley Mazda. In an amazing act of spontaneous generosity, Peter Bell gave the car to the Foundation!

The winners of this year’s Will McDonough Memorial Winner’s cup were Alta Communication’s Tim Dibble, Jack Carlton, Dave Munn, and Greg Howe, whose team was captained by hockey great Mike O'Connell.

The Robert Fraley Memorial Goodness award is given each year to an individual who, like Robert, demonstrates selflessness, character, and compassion in service to others. This year’s well deserving recipient, Tom Hoffman, urged participants at the Awards Reception to get involved and do something to help children.

It was a memorable event for all involved and resulted in raising the total distributed by the Foundation to $700,000 over three years. These funds have benefited 45 Massachusetts’ children’s charities.

2nd Annual Sean McDonough Charitable Foundation
Celebrity Golf Classic 2003

The 2nd annual Sean McDonough Charitable Foundation fundraising events were dedicated to the memory of Will McDonough, the legendary Boston Globe sports columnist who passed away in January 2003. The two days were filled with emotion as Will was constantly in the hearts and minds of the participants. The Samuel Adams Celebrity Draw Party and Auction included a beautiful video tribute to Sean’s father, produced by Cramer Productions. Many of the celebrities in attendance were close friends and colleagues of Will, including America’s top sports broadcaster Bob Costas, NFL coach Tom Coughlin, and Boston sports legends John Havlicek, Bob Cousy, ML Carr, Jo Jo White, Gino Cappelletti, Andre Tippett and Steve Grogan. Sean announced that the winning team in the golf tournament each year would receive the Will McDonough Memorial Winner’s Cup. The party also included musical performances by participants in Project Step, a program which teaches inner city youth to play instruments, and a moving speech by Alberto Mendes. Alberto spoke with great candor and emotion about how he turned his life around through his involvement with Summer Search. Project Step and Summer Search were among the inaugural recipients of grants from the Foundation in December 2002.

The winners of the first Will McDonough Cup posted a remarkable low net score of 48, the tournament record, over the challenging Tom Fazio designed Oaks Course at the International in Bolton, Massachusetts. The team, led by Boston Bruins forward Ted Donato, included the Delia, Inc. foursome of Cal Callahan, Craig Callahan, Bob Luyckx and Don Chamberlain. Former Boston University football star Jim Lippie aided the cause by filling in for Donato over the first few holes of the tournament as Ted was making his way to the course after Bruins practice. The golf tournament was once again sponsored by Saturn Partners.

The Robert Fraley Memorial Goodness Award was presented to Mike Rotondi, a member of the Board of Directors of the Sean McDonough Foundation. He and his family have generously sponsored the Awards Ceremony after the golf tournament in every year of the events’ existence. Mike is a man with a huge heart who is well known for his remarkable support of many charitable causes.

The events raised $240,000, bringing the two year total to $380,000 distributed to 32 different wonderful children’s charities throughout the Commonwealth.

Inaugural
Sean McDonough Charitable Foundation
Celebrity Golf Classic 2002

The inaugural Sean McDonough Charitable Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic was held on October 7, 2002 at the fabulous Oaks Course at the International in Bolton, Massachusetts. The 25 nationally known celebrities, including Academy Award winner Matt Damon, legendary football coach Bill Parcells, PGA Tour star Brad Faxon, Olympic gold medal winning speed skater Dan Jansen, and Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer, were matched with foursomes and participated in a “bramble” style tournament. The winning team, with a low net score of 51, was captained by internationally known chef and restaurant owner Todd English. His partners were the dynamic duo of Mark Keenan and Paul Coleman from Foxwoods Resort and Casino, and brothers Greg and Nicolas Dunn, who provided plenty of power off the tee.

The tournament was sponsored by Saturn Partners. The highlight of the post-golf awards ceremony was the awarding of the Robert Fraley Memorial Goodness Award. It is named for the well known sports attorney who lost his life in a plane crash in October 1999. He was a superior human being and a close friend of the McDonough family. The award is given each year to an individual or individuals who, like Robert, demonstrate selflessness, character, and compassion in service to others. Saturn Partners Managing Partner Jeffrey McCormick, whose generosity helped the Foundation get off to a flying start, and attorney Warren Baker, who did all of the legal work to get the Foundation off the ground, were the deserving recipients of the inaugural Fraley Awards.

The festivities began the night before at the Samuel Adams Celebrity Draw Party and auctions at the spectacular Boston Harbor Hotel. Sam Adams Founder and Brewmaster Jim Koch was a gracious host for the crowd of more than 300 golfers, celebrities and Foundation guests. The party and golf tournament resulted in a total of $140,000 being donated to children’s charities throughout Massachusetts in December 2002.
